The Pre-K Now Satellite Conference “Breaking Down Barriers to Quality Pre-K” was a huge success. Forty-five people attended the broadcast at the site hosted by the Ounce of Prevention Fund in downtown Chicago. Across the country more than 2,000 pre-kindergarten advocates gathered in 35 states to share and learn lessons about professional development, collaboration between early childhood programs, and partnering with home-based care providers. The Ounce’s 2008 Legislative Summary is now available! The summary provides a synopsis of bills from the 2008 session of the General Assembly that relate to children’s health and nutrition, welfare, public assistance, and education. This year’s summary is significantly smaller than usual; the political climate in Springfield this year made it very difficult to move bills through the legislative process during the session. For example, during last year’s session, 750 bills passed both chambers and were sent to the governor for a signature, but this year, less than 300 completed that process.
The summary provides a brief description of each bill and its Public Act number. For more information on any of these Acts, visit the Illinois General Assembly website and search by the bill number. If you have other questions, please contact advocacy@ounceofprevention.org.
